When I was growing up, my Mom always played Bunco; and like any child my Mom was sooo old, so I just assumed Bunco was some old lady game. She would always tell stories about her Bunco friends and silly miss-adventures this group of 12 ladies did over a course of many years. I only remember my Mom hosting Bunco one time at our house and it was a big deal. I was young, probably 5 or 6, yet I still remember this event. My Mom always seemed to have the time of her life with her Bunco ladies, yet I never thought I would partake in such an "old lady" past time.
Fast forward about 30 years and here I am in my 3rd year of Bunco. I can certainly see why my Mother enjoyed this so much, as I have the best time each month with the ladies I play with. We are a group of 12 that has changed a lot over the course of 3 years, however, we have a core group that has stuck with each other and really have a special bond. We all have very different lives, yet, every 2nd Friday of the month we talk, laugh and sometimes cry about the events in our lives. We let our hair down and act as if we are college girls away from home for the first time. We have little gossip that goes around, which is strange for a group of women and we all look out for each other. Our children play with each other and husbands talk too, it's certainly a special group.
It's funny, I always thought Bunco was a card game, something like Old Maid, certainly not a dice game that I would play once a month and know all the rules like the back of my hand. It's funny how we always warp into our parents, as I have done with playing Bunco.
Do you play? Did your Mom?
