Is gardening the way to go?
You can't go anywhere or do anything without thinking about money. This couldn't be more evident when going to the grocery store. Each week it seems the price of fresh fruit or veggies continues to rise, yet my grocery budget continues to go down.
I thought, what could be the solution to this problem...A HOME GARDEN!!! No sooner where those thoughts out of my mind and my sister Theresa called with information on planting a home garden, then my Mom and then the news. I guess everyone is thinking the same thing and really trying to find solutions to saving money.
Now, I don't have a green thumb, not even a little green. I buy a ton of flowers and plants each spring and most are dead by 4th of July. If they make it to August, it is a true miracle. I wondered how I could grow my own garden without making a huge mess of my yard and spending more money then buying things from the store.
My sister, Theresa, sent me a great website that has a ton of ideas on how to make a home garden. Some as simple as plant box gardens, to a full fledged garden. I think I may start small and plant a few things in pots and see were it goes. Theresa is getting ambitious and going for gold and converting part of her yard into a garden. I wish her luck! If it goes well, I can do my "shopping" in her yard and not worry about planting or buying...just kidding.
Anyway, here is the website....

Go for it!!!! You can do it!!!
Every year, I plant tomatoes, lettuce, eggplants, peppers (hot and green), and this year I am adding spinach, cucumber, and possibly broccoli. We have a 10x10 garden in our backyard that Tom dug up with a gas-powered tiller when we moved in. It went so well the last two years that Tom wants to double it in size this year! I'm not so sure as I'm the one who does all the planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, etc. and it is a big commitment to keep it going. It is a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it, and it is absolutely a huge cost savings, once you put in the initial investment of getting it all set up. One issue we have had problems with are birds going after the tomatoes (so Tom installed netting over the entire garden), and also bunnies eating our lettuce (so it is fenced in all around with chicken wire).
I would say to go for it! It is a lot of work, but most definitely worth the effort. I LOVE my garden!!!! In fact, planting here starts this weekend! I can't wait! :o)
Look at the website weekedngardener.net they have a hint that taping stips of myler tape on on sticks in the garden will help keep the birds aways. It has to be able to flap in the wind the noise bothers them. we have the same problem with the birds and the apple tree. I like the net idea - don had mentioned he was going to do that as well
Ohhh...Yep, we tried that!!! We've had windmills, flapping foil strips, rattling trays, everything ... including a scarecrow! We have AGGRESSIVE and FEARLESS birds here! They weren't scared of anything! So, we finally resorted to the netting and it has worked the best. Although, we still get the occasional bird that manages to weasel its way in!!
We had a HUGE garden in Missouri. We had a gigantic yard. It was kind of sad to leave it, but knew that Thomas would have no time to tend it this year anyway. I will have to send you some photos of it. In addition to the big plot of garden, around the edges of our back patio we also did a strawberry patch & an herb garden. It was great. Our whole neighborhood shopped the garden...they didn't have to check out though! LOL. We loved to share as we had more than enough. IT was very therapeutic & yummy! It is a lot of work, but the girls would really get a kick out of it too. It is great family fun!
